20年前のことですが、群馬県高崎市に行く機会がありました。早々に用が済み時間に余裕ができたので、どこか観光スポットに行ってみようということになり高崎観音（だったと思います）に寄ってみました。境内の様子はほとんど覚えていませんが、参道の光景は今でも思い出します。
緑が茂る坂の途中に出店があり、台の上に沢山の招き猫が大きさ順にきちんと整列し美しく並んでいました。
猫好きで招き猫好きでもある私は、その思いがけない光景が楽しくてテンションが上がり、あまりのワクワクさを連れにたしなめられた記憶があります。
一人で訪れていたらならば、周りに遠慮することなく大小様々な招き猫たちを抱えて連れ帰ったでしょうが、我慢して一つに絞り大事に持ち帰りました。
シンプルな絵柄で一番楽しそうな顔つきの子を選んだのだったと思います。
It was 20 years ago I visited Takasaki in Gunma. Things went well fast and we’re free to go for tourist spot, so we did. We went to Takasaki Kan-non, if I’m correct.
Not sure of what the precincts looked like, whereas the approach to the shrine was memorable.
In the middle of slope, lushly green, there was a branch store selling lucky cats. Cats are aligned perfectly from small size to big size on the table. I, as a cat lover and am also lucky cat lover, the moment was too pleasing and got too excited that my friend scolded me. I barely kept myself and bought only one, however If I were alone, without any hesitation, I would have hold many of them and went home with them. The one whose been chosen is the one who had most simple paint job and with the happiest facial expression.
連れ帰ったこの子はその後、モチーフとして作品にちょくちょく登場します。
家には招き猫が何匹かいますが、登場するのはいつもこの子です。
He often time appears in my work. There are other lucky cats at my house, but indeed he’s the only one in my work.
後姿もなかなか良いです。（２０年前のものなので、汚れはご容赦ください）
Not only the front side he’s good, also his back side. Don’t worry about the dirt, he’s 20 years old.
ご存じの通り、高崎は『だるま』が有名です。高崎の招き猫はだるまと同じ製作方法のいわゆる張り子で作られており、質感だけでなく筆使いもだるまを彷彿とさせます。
絵柄もクオリティーも個体によってまちまちですが、どれも愛らしく魅力あふれる伝統工芸品です。
嬉しいことにこの子は人気者で、暇を見つけてはチマチマと小さな招き猫を描いています。
Takasaki is known for “Daruma” production, which the cat is been made in the same way, papier-mache. Not only the texture it reminds of Daruma, but the touch of brush strokes does and make every piece unique. It’s adorable and attractive Japanese traditional craft.
The good news is I’m not the only one who love him, I draw him little by little when
there’s free time.
